About MACOG's Regional CFI Program
The Charging & Fueling Infrastructure (CFI) Grant Program is a federal initiative designed deploy electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure and other alternative fueling infrastructure in urban and rural communities in publicly accessible locations. Learn more here on the U.S. Department of Transportation website.
MACOG aims to use Charging & Fueling Infrastructure (CFI) funding for three main objectives:
- Fill gaps in EV infrastructure in rural and disadvantaged communities
- Target areas where EV infrastructure and adoption and currently low, beyond where the private market is supporting investments in EV charging
- Provide reliable, accessible charging which promotes safety for vehicles and pedestrians
MACOG's CFI program is limited to our region in northern Indiana: Elkhart, Kosciusko, Marshall, and St. Joseph counties.
Implementation Phases - Fast & Destination Charging
Level 3 "Fast" Charging
Fast charging stations provide hundreds of miles in less than an hour, ideal for long distance travel or short dwell times for those that cannot charge at home, rideshare drivers, etc.
In late 2024, MACOG will award funding for the procurement, installation, operation, & maintenance of three Level 3 (DCFC / Fast Charging) EV charging stations. Two stations will be located along US-30, one each near City of Plymouth and City of Warsaw. The third station will be located at the South Bend International Airport.
Level 2 "Destination" Electric Vehicle Charging
Level 2 stations are intended to draw people to a destination for several hours, and are not intended to serve enroute charging. Charging speed may vary between 10-30 miles per hour depending on electrical power and vehicle efficiency.
In late 2024, MACOG will accept applications to competitively select site hosts for Level 2 ("destination") EV charging stations. MACOG will oversee the procurement, installation, operation, & maintenance of 32 Level 2 EVSE through 2027. 14 stations will be deployed in rural areas, while 18 will be located in urban & disadvantaged areas. The first phase of Level 2 stations will go live by the end of 2025.
